Another Gardner innovation! The unique line twist remover that allows you to control and manage the build up of line twist that will always accumulate in your mainline whilst using your reel’s clutch and free-spool/baitrunner mechanism, or after spooling up for the first time.

Most anglers rely on their fishing reel’s clutch whilst playing fish – but most don’t realise each time that your reel spool turns 360 degrees, you are putting an additional single twist in your reel line. Now imagine how many times this happens whilst you’re playing a carp, or the twists that are putting into the reel line when you get a run and the fish tears off against it accompanied by a screaming buzzer.

Severe line twist will weaken the mainline, cause frap-ups and tangles during the cast and can make the line unmanageable whilst adjusting bite indicators and changing rigs, etc. During normal use a high proportion of the twist is pushed down towards the terminal tackle as you reel in and concentrated in the last few rod lengths of line, potentially damaging it and leaving it looking coiled and untidy and ultimately reducing its performance.

You can remove this twist, keeping your line in tip top condition for longer with one of our Spin Doctors.

Simply tie the Spin Doctor directly onto your mainline (without a swivel) when the line twist gets bad, cast out and reel in. The Spin Doctor is designed to rotate anti-clockwise during the retrieve, so it will remove the twists created by most fixed spool reels as you reel it back in.

Use the weight of the Spin Doctor most suited to the distance you are fishing.

The Spin Doctor works with any Monofilament line – copolymer or Fluorocarbon.

Gardner Spin Doctors are available in three sizes: 40g (Yellow), 70g (Red) and 100g (White).

Note – If the twist is particularly bad start off with a ½ length cast and retrieve, then make a second cast at about ¾ distance and retrieve again. Normally this will be sufficient and your line should now be free of twists and ready to re-tie to your rig.

    Hi there,

I’ve used the Gardner spin doctor before and purchased another 100g one recently to remove line twist in my braid as its causing lots of wind knots and you can see the braided mainline is really twisted, I tried using the spin doctor but unfortunately the twist is in the same direction as the spin doctor works, do you have a spin doctor that spins in the opposite direction please? Or maybe you can suggest how best to remove the twist, I don’t have a boat or I’d pay line out and let the water untwist it?

    Many thanks

    John

      Hi John
The design of the Spin Doctor means that it works with the vast majority of fixed spool reels in relation to the direction that line twist occurs whilst the clutch is slipping (the main cause of line twisting during use).
The only exceptions we can think of are if you’re using a Mitchel 300 or some other fixed spool reel for which the rotation of the bail arm/roller is anticlockwise (if you are holding the rod and the reel is facing away from you) or perhaps using lures that are creating a lot of twist in your braid that could account for the line twist in the opposite direction.
Another alternative would be to try walking the line out across a field a few times, reeling in through a glove to try and puch teh twist out the braid.

Hi, I am using flourocarbon and am suffering pretty bad line twist how do I know what weight to go for or will they all work no matter what distance you have to cast?

    Thanks
    Lee

      Hi Lee,

The different sizes are mainly related to the distance you are fishing and the power of the rods you are using.

If you are predominantly fishing at say 70+ yards then the really light weight 40 gram Spin Dr might be a little on the light to get all that line off the spool – and therefore sort the line twist out – though in reality most the line twist is pushed down towards the end of the line (nearest the lead).

From personal experience using Fluoro (Mirage) I would recommend that as well using the Spin Doctor to periodically reduce the line twist in the line – you get into the habit of reeling in pinching the line above the reel as this has the dual benefit of cleaning some of the suspended particles that cling to the material and pushing out the line twist each time you reel in.

      Hope this helps,
      The Gardner Team
