After a nightmare spring of forty odd nights without a bite, I was beginning to doubt myself big time. The lake is challenging and to be fair had only done eight bites from January through to June! It is known to be a bit of a head banger, with a small stock of carp and almost half the lake out of bounds!
I finally got a bite on the Sunday evening in a small shallow bay. It had been extremely hot, so this seemed the obvious place to look first. After seeing one show in the little shallow bay after only being there five minutes, the decision was made to fish to little Micromesh pva bags across to the far margin. It wasn’t long before I had the rods in position.
The take came just twenty minutes after casting out which unfortunately fell off. To say I was disappointed was an understatement! It was one of those things I suppose, the hook just pulled for no reason.
The following Sunday I was back and felt I was going to blank for sure, it was far too hot and I couldn’t see anything feeding as night time temperatures were reaching 18 degrees! After seeing a few fish on the surface in one corner of the lake I decided to do a quick over nighter. I shortened the hooklink down to 3 inches and attached a super sharp size 6 Covert Mugga. I didn’t plan on loosing anymore!
The bite came at first light, it was an epic battle and I was convinced I was attached to the lakes biggun. I was massively surprised to see a 20lb common in the net, but all the same any fish from this lake is a huge achievement! It seemed buy shortening the Chod Skin hooklink and a big sharp Covert Mugga did the trick, it was never coming off! Hopefully I can bag some more, I’ll keep you informed.
