In practice they are excellent for accurately depositing freebies around your hookbait, avoiding the unwanted attentions of seagulls and other bird life that quickly learn to associate the swish of a throwing stick or the crack of a catapult elastic with the imminent arrival of free food. So light they can be clipped directly to the line in place of a lead, using the actual fishing rod already clipped up ready to cast. Minimal disturbance means far less spooking of wary fish.
